From overwhelm to sacred gift: Highly Sensitive People

Being Highly Sensitive is a unique experience and one that is often misunderstood. Before I share more about what it means to be an HSP and how energy medicine can empower your experience, I want to share a recent client’s reflection:

“Years of talk therapy, books and research had taught my MIND, what it meant to be an HSP…. I knew the definition, the traits, the strategies to use…but it still felt heavy… like a burden, something that I had to manage and control.

What a shift this has been! Energy Medicine has fully changed my perspective as an HSP; teaching me how to self-soothe and live my life in a way that allows for freedom, joy and rest. I can now use all the data I receive as a way to enhance my life, my relationships and my work.

Best of all, I feel it in my BODY! It’s like my nervous system has released alI the years of trauma when it didn’t know how to take care of itself…my CELLS feel different, as if my neurons are now more resilient. I can use my nervous system as a strength while also clearing out any information that gets stuck. Just because I see it and feel it doesn’t mean I have to hold it in my body…. in fact that is the opposite of an empowered HSP.

Many of my clients recognize themselves in this experience, they are gifted intuitive people who

  1. don’t know how to manage the massive amount of input they receive in all forms: visual, emotional, auditory, sensory and more

  2. Have experienced years of trauma and overwhelm living in a society and with loved ones who don’t know how to support the unique talents and gifts of being highly sensitive.

There is a different way of living… I’m here to help. This post is here to support you and is in two parts:

Part 1: What does it mean to be Highly Sensitive?

Flipping the HSP experience from victimhood/detachment into loving your gifts is a journey worth taking. Although different for each unique person, here are four typical traits found in highly sensitive people:

Depth of Processing Strength

You have the ability to process more information, more deeply across multiple dimensions. You feel and see the connection between past and present often linking spiritual meaning into everyday life. People mention you have an excellent memory and are in awe at your level of detail.

Overstimulation Tendency

Your brain is able to take in a massive amount of data in rapid fire time. It’s as if you feel the whole fabric of a situation (sights, sounds, meaning, colors, emotions) in a single glance. Without the tools and mastery of this skill, you become overwhelmed, withdrawing or lashing out.

Empathetic Sixth Sense

You know the emotion of someone else sometimes before they do. Your body responds as if their experience is your own. Using what feels like a sixth sense, you are easily able to relate to others life stories and are often the one people turn to for advice.

Subtle Stimuli Master

You notice the smallest things- a vase moved every so slightly, the softest sway of a single leaf out the window… You are highly aware of your environment, at home, at work, with loved ones. Your highly attuned nervous system has the ability to track these multiple data points all at once.


Part 2: The POWER OF ENERGY MEDICINE

Different than talk therapy, traditional body work, massage and/or acupuncture, Energy Medicine offers an experience deep into your nervous system that allows you to feel safe, rested and secure in your body. It’s not an intellectual understanding but rather a calming salve and recoding of what it means to be highly sensitive. Here are 5 key principles of an empowered HSP that I teach to my clients:

  1. Learning how to clear out energy or people that aren’t YOU. Because your neurons are able to feel into others so easily, it is essential to know when someone else’s energy is in your field (causing agitation, frustration) and how to clear it.

  2. Healing and maturing your nervous system. So many of us have lived years without the proper tools and knowledge of what it means to be gifted in sensitivity and intuition. This leads to a backlog of trauma, tension and old patterns that are auto triggered even with your best intentions. Our work together clears out the old gunk and gives space for your nervous system to mature into resiliency.

  3. Grounding. Having a strong sense of your energy, space and body is really important for HSPs. Learning how to ground your field enables you to clearly know the difference between your energy signature and something that is outside of you. Clients say learning this is like magic!!

  4. Acknowledge, accept and live your gifts. Many highly sensitive people were raised in family units and with loved ones who didn’t honor their gifts and in many cases teased and shut down their ability to connect… often creating shame and/or perfectionism within the HSP experience. Releasing that wound and loving your superpower is a key part of healing.

  5. LIVE differently, unapologetically. Using our typical conditioning and what society perpetuates to us ISN’t GOING TO WORK. The highly sensitive nervous system is an ancient technology evolved over thousands of years and is not supported by modern society. Learning to engage and do life in a way that honors time in nature, creativity, inspiration and time alone allows for you to be fully present and empowered as the visionary you are born to be.
