Ritual
Prepare for the Summer Solstice ritual by gathering a piece of cloth or cloth pouch and midsummer herbs. Use any combination of sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, lavender, Saint John's wort and vervain that appeals to you. Meditate on your pain, troubles, sorrows and illnesses. Tie up the cloth or pouch with a red string or yarn and save it for the ritual.
Think about the qualities of fire because the Summer Solstice ritual is a fire ritual. Contemplate what you need protection from (debt-collectors, a jealous friend, an abusive family member). Write down in what aspects of your life you need strength because the Summer Solstice ritual is a time to gather courage.
THE MIDSUMMER CEREMONY
First the candle on the right of the altar is lit while the following is spoken, "Lord of the sun, God of truth and might in your honor, do I this candle light."
You then light the left altar candle and repeat, "Lady of the moon, Goddess of celestial power I beseech thee to bless me from this hour."
At this point a circle is cast and a callfor the Guardians is made. You then face the altar and light the floating candle, proceed to pick up the bowl that holds the candle, and face it toward the Eastern quadrant. You will be addressing the quadrant and holding the bowl in offering as you speak. Once you have addressed one quadrant, you will proceed to the next, each time holding the bowl with the lit candle toward it in offering and saying:
EAST
Let now the winds of consciousness bring forth insight and wisdom.
SOUTH
Let now the fires of awareness bring forth motivation and inspiration.
WEST
Let now the waves of completeness bring forth love and understanding.
NORTH
Let now the blossoming, fertile earth bring forth the manifestation of desire.
The bowl is then placed back on the altar and you turn to the south quadrant and say:
To the great Lord of the Sun
My gratitude I do show
As in life and spirit
I work to progress and grow.
I thank you, father an dlight
By each and every work and deed.
That's all I have and shall receive
Is all that I shall ever want or need.
At this time, you need to take a moment to meditate on the meaning of the ritual and of the season. You will also need to energize your candle with your own wishes. This is done by placing your hands over the candle, expressing your desire, and saying, "Sun and flame bring joy again."
After this, you will then be be blessing the bread and the wine. It is also the beginning of the end of the ritual. For the foodand wine, you offer this blessing:
Within my heart is devoted feeling
Vainly should my lips express
I come before you after kneeling
And pray this time and place you bless
You may now dismiss the Guardians at this time and put out the flames of the altar candles. You start with the left and say, "Lady of the moon, Goddess of celestial power, I bid thee bliss and protectme from this hour."
Now you proceed to the right candle and as you extinguish it you say, "Lord of the SUn, God of truth and might, Guide and guard me as I go into the night."
Upon leaving, allow the floating candle to burn out on its own.
